About the Sender Retreat Foundation

The Sender Retreat Foundation Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in DeLand, Florida. We exist to make compassionate, professional adult day care available to seniors, veterans, and adults with disabilities throughout Volusia County, regardless of their financial situation. Our work began long before the foundation did. For more than 20 years, our founder Ana Rosa Randolph operated adult day care centers in DeLand and Orange City, watching first-hand how families struggled to afford care for aging parents, spouses, and adult children with disabilities. Many of the people who needed help most could not get it. In 2022 she founded the Sender Retreat Foundation to close that gap.

Empathy and understanding. We approach each person’s journey knowing their life experience is their own. Care is tailored to the individual, not to a category.

Elevating dignity. We respect the choices, preferences and autonomy of the people we serve, and build an environment where they keep both respect and independence.

Commitment to excellence. From trained caregivers to the facilities themselves, we hold the standard high, because the people in our care have earned it.

Celebrating diversity. We build an inclusive environment that honors the cultural backgrounds and personal histories of every participant.

Those commitments rest on five core values the centers and the Foundation share: team before self, because good care is collaborative; commitment to client well-being, so that every decision is measured against a participant’s physical, emotional, social and mental health; integrity, because families are trusting us with the person they love; a caring approach that builds real relationships with participants and their families; and flexibility, because needs change and we change with them.

Care is delivered by staff who are screened before they start and trained for the specific realities of this work. Team members undergo background checks and hold certifications in CPR, First Aid and Alzheimer’s disease training. Staff are proficient in both English and Spanish, with strong interpretation skills — which matters in a county where many families are more comfortable discussing a parent’s health in Spanish.

A registered nurse is on site. Licensed professionals administer and monitor medication throughout the day, and physical and occupational therapists work with participants by appointment, as prescribed by a physician. The staff-to-participant ratio is one to six. Martha V. Freire serves as supervisor, and as Secretary of the Foundation’s board.

The Foundation itself is governed by volunteers: Edda M. Mendez, President; Martha V. Freire, Secretary; and founder Ana I. Rosa Randolph, who also serves as registered agent. Nobody on the Foundation draws a salary.

Ana I. Rosa Randolph, MS, RD, LD, has spent more than three decades in the healthcare profession, and the past twenty-five of them working with seniors in Volusia County. She holds a BS in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Puerto Rico and an MS in Human Nutrition from Rutgers University, and she is a Registered Dietitian and Licensed Dietitian.

Her route into adult day care was personal. While caring for her own ageing mother she owned and administered an assisted living facility for four years, and she went on to operate adult day care centers in DeLand and Orange City for more than twenty years. In that time she watched family after family struggle to afford care for an ageing parent, a spouse or an adult child with a disability — and watched the people who needed help most go without it. In 2022 she founded the Sender Retreat Foundation to close that gap. In her own words: “There is a need my heart could not ignore.”

Ana’s work has been recognized with awards from the DeLand Area Chamber of Commerce, the Junior League of DeLand and the U.S. Small Business Administration. She is married to Dr. Andrew J. Randolph, a physician in internal medicine whose specialty is geriatric medicine.

Today the foundation supports two licensed centers, the Adopt a Senior program, and a growing network of caregivers, volunteers, and community partners. Our mission is clear: to provide adults, the elderly, veterans, and disabled individuals with access to adult day care services that prevent institutionalization and improve quality of life. We deliver long-term social, emotional, and behavioral care in a culturally appropriate setting, serving the underserved and low-income population of Volusia County. We believe that aging with dignity is not a luxury. It is a community responsibility.
