Adopt a Senior
How it works
Sponsored days of care for seniors who could not otherwise attend
The Adopt a Senior program is the Sender Retreat Foundation's signature initiative. It funds adult day care services for low-income seniors, veterans and adults with disabilities who could not otherwise afford to attend. Sponsorships cover the full continuum of care — meals, health monitoring, therapies, transportation and social engagement — so a sponsored participant receives the same day of care as any other participant. By sponsoring a senior you directly prevent nursing home placement and keep a family together.
Care is delivered at two licensed adult day care centers in Volusia County: Sender Retreat in DeLand (1270 Orange Camp Rd) and Stay For A Day in Orange City (1001 TownCenter Drive). Both are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and participants go home to their families every evening.
What a sponsored day includes
Everything a participant needs from 8 am to 5 pm
Personalized health monitoring. Blood sugar, blood pressure, weight and height are tracked, and licensed professionals administer and monitor medications throughout the day.
On-site therapies. Physical and occupational therapy as prescribed by a physician, to improve mobility, manage pain and reduce the risk of falls.
Meals and nutrition. Two meals and one snack every day. Menus meet the requirements of the Florida Adult Care Food Program and are approved by a Registered Dietitian.
Personal care. Help with showers, grooming and other activities of daily living, so participants keep their hygiene, confidence and dignity.
Structured social and cognitive activities. Crafts, games, music, group conversation and companionship that combat isolation.
Transportation and referrals. Rides to and from the center where a sponsorship covers them, and referrals to healthcare providers, community services and assistance programs.
Who qualifies
Older adults, veterans and adults with disabilities who need daytime support
We serve older adults, veterans and adults with disabilities who need daytime supervision, social engagement or health monitoring, and we prioritize underserved and low-income individuals. Families who cannot cover attendance through a long-term care plan, VA benefits, long-term care insurance or private pay can ask about a sponsored place.
Each potential participant is assessed individually, including people living with Alzheimer's disease or related conditions, to make sure the program and environment are the right fit. How to help
Three ways to sponsor
Give online. Any amount funds care; gifts are pooled to cover sponsored days. The Sender Retreat Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 88-2126844); donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law and you will receive a receipt.
Sponsor a senior or an event. Call (386) 734-4442 or email [email protected] to talk through sponsoring a specific participant's attendance. From Tiny Feet to Golden Years, on October 10, 2026, is the Foundation's largest fundraiser of the year; tables are $125 and event sponsorships are available.
Volunteer. Activities companions help with crafts, games, music, conversation and one-on-one company. No healthcare experience is needed; we provide the training.
